RAKU POTTERY

The word Raku means “enjoyment of freedom.” Raku pottery is created through a unique low-fire reduction firing process, inspired by techniques developed in 16th century Japan. Raku pieces were originally used in ancient Japan for tea ceremonies. Today, Claybanks Pottery artists use the Raku method to create decorative pieces for your home with a distinctive metallic or white crackle finish.

Glazed Raku pieces are placed into a kiln and heated to the glaze melting point (approx. 1600˚ - 1800˚). They are then removed while hot, with tongs, and placed in a metal can of sawdust and other combustible material, which flames up around the pot. The lid is put on the can, and the pot is left to smolder, which causes the clay to turn black. The pieces are left to cool for a short time, then removed and cooled further in water, and then scrubbed clean.

Because of the firing method, Raku pieces are considered decorative, and are not waterproof.
